How to Activate Your Airalo eSIM
This page provides a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to activating an Airalo eSIM on your device. Follow the process carefully to avoid common errors.
Preparation Checklist
Before purchasing an Airalo plan, complete the following preparation steps. Skipping any of these can result in activation failure or unexpected charges.
- Confirm eSIM compatibility: Check that your device model supports eSIM. See our compatibility guide.
- Check device unlock status: Your device must be unlocked (not locked to a UK carrier). Contact your provider if unsure.
- Update your operating system: Ensure your device runs iOS 12.1+ or Android 9+. Older OS versions may not support eSIM.
- Create an Airalo account: Register at Airalo's website or download the Airalo app before purchasing.
- Note your destination country: Confirm the exact country or countries you will visit to select the correct plan.
- Estimate your data needs: Calculate expected daily data usage for maps, messaging, streaming, and email.
- Check plan validity dates: Ensure the plan validity period covers your entire trip.
- Confirm hotspot requirement: If you need to share data with a laptop, verify the plan includes hotspot functionality.
- Have a stable Wi-Fi connection ready: eSIM installation requires an internet connection. Use Wi-Fi at home before travelling.
- Save the QR code: After purchase, save the QR code to a secure location. You cannot regenerate it.
- Note the activation code: Also save the manual activation code as a backup in case QR scanning fails.
- Check your device storage: Ensure sufficient storage space for the eSIM profile (typically minimal, but required).
Step-by-Step Process
1
Choose Your Plan
Visit Airalo's website or app. Search for your destination country or region. Compare available plans by data allowance, validity, and price. Read the plan details carefully, noting any restrictions.
2
Purchase the Plan
Add the plan to your cart and complete payment. Airalo accepts major cards and PayPal. You will receive a confirmation email with your QR code and activation code.
3
Install the eSIM Profile
On iOS: Settings > Mobile Data > Add eSIM > Use QR Code. On Android: Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > Add eSIM. Scan the QR code from your confirmation email.
4
Label the eSIM
When prompted, give the eSIM a recognisable label (e.g., "Japan Trip" or "Europe Data"). This helps you manage multiple eSIM profiles on your device.
5
Configure Data Settings
Set the Airalo eSIM as your default data line. Keep your UK SIM as the default for calls and SMS. This ensures you receive UK calls while using Airalo data abroad.
6
Configure APN (if required)
Some plans require manual APN configuration. Check the plan details in the Airalo app. If APN settings are required, enter them in your device's mobile data settings.
7
Enable the eSIM at Your Destination
When you arrive at your destination, enable the Airalo eSIM in your device settings. The plan validity period typically begins when you first connect to the local network.
8
Verify Connection
Confirm you are connected to the correct network. Check data usage in the Airalo app. If you experience issues, consult our troubleshooting guide or contact us.

- Do not delete the eSIM profile from your device — it cannot be reinstalled once deleted.

- When you return to the UK, switch back to your UK SIM as the default data line.
Limitations and Exceptions
The following limitations apply to Airalo eSIM plans and the activation process. Understanding these in advance prevents disappointment.
- eSIM profiles can only be installed on one device at a time.
- Once deleted from a device, an eSIM profile cannot be reinstalled (contact Airalo support in exceptional circumstances).
- Some older eSIM-compatible devices have a limit on the number of eSIM profiles they can store.
- Activation requires a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection — you cannot activate an eSIM without internet access.
- Plans do not include emergency services (999/112) — use your physical UK SIM for emergency calls.
- Coverage in remote areas, underground transport, and on aircraft is not guaranteed.
- Plan validity begins when you first connect to the network, not when you purchase the plan (verify this for each specific plan).
- Airalo does not guarantee specific network speeds — actual speeds depend on local network conditions.
